Music Video: Jay-Z and Kanye West – No Church In The Wild

– By Yufeng K.

My absolute favourite track from Jay-Z and Kanye West’s 2011 collab ‘Watch The Throne’, ‘No Church In The Wild’ gets an official video of epic proportions courtesy of French director Romain Gavras. Known for the gritty ginger genocide of rapper M.I.A.’s ‘Born Free‘, Gavras does not court controversy this time but still manages to send out a strong message all the same.

Set to scenes of rioters clashing with police, Molotov cocktails are thrown, horsemen club down dissenters, a policeman is mercilessly kicked off a ledge. The violence, while not graphic, is gratuitous and adds a deep poignancy to the song. “Who will make it out alive,” asks Frank Ocean, whose vocals are integral to the track, and we ask the same.

‘No Church In The Wild’ is no stranger to powerful videos though, perhaps testament to its strength. An unofficial video put out by the L.A. based High5Collective, a group known for making high quality fan-made videos, made rounds around the blogosphere last year. Watch it below.

Personally, I’m partial to the H5C one but to each his own.
